Te Hiku Dune Lake Restoration

Nga Roto Tapokapoka

The project starts the long-term restoration, enhancement and protection of three Te Hiku o Te Ika dune lakes/wetlands; Onepu (Aupouri, Te Kao), Waiparera (NgaiTakoto, Waiharara), and Split (NgaiTakoto, Ahipara). These lakes and wetlands, although unique, of regional, national and international ecological significance and a key feature of the landscape, they are in a poor state requiring urgent attention. The mahi includes practical remedial work and monitoring - riparian fencing, planting native buffer zones, pest control, weed eradication/control, alongside training and upskilling.

The educational training and qualifications component is part of an innovative long term employment strategy to increase capacity and capability, and build Te Hiku Iwi workforce in readiness for employment opportunities. This holistic approach takes account of our four interconnected wellbeing pou - environmental, economic, social and cultural.
