Lake Waiparera

BASE INFORMATION

Located new Waiharara in the rohe of NgaiTakoto

 103 ha (largest Aupouri lake), 6m deep
 Catchment approx. 70% pasture from farm land adjacent - nutrients entering through drains, surface run off
 Surrounded by pine forest with small pockets of native vegetation around the open water area known locally as lake Yelavich (wetlands part of this system)
 There are no outflows, several inflows
 Wetland requires weed control, removal of wilding and remnant pines, in-fill planting, and a small amount of fence maintenance

ECOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Significant site
 A healthy population of mudfish (black and northern) in covenanted areas
 Kuta & Raupo
 Frogs
 Bittern

STATUS

*Eutrophic

*Algae in wetlands, current summer 2018

*NRC moderate to high status, part of Northland Lakes monitoring 3 monthly recordings of temperature, nutrients, water clarity

RISKS & ISSUES

Fire damage April 2015 including one of 3 mudfish monitoring sites
(topical so maybe ok). Island pines burned - an opportunity to re-
vegetate in natives before weeds take over.
 Importance of fire-fighting practices re water source and retardants
used in ecologically sensitive areas
 Freedom camping site

Fence repairs and new fencing to stock-proof

Focus on weed management and build on regenerating areas.
1. Weed control
2. Fencing to exclude stock access
3. Remove wilding pines where natives are regenerating
4. Remove non-native species from picnic area near SH 1
