Tuna Wānanga March 2018

At our wānanga in March with Dr Erica Williams from NIWA, she shared learnings about Tuna with the Dune Lake Project Team and local schools. Baseline data of biological indicators was gathered from the three project lakes - Bulrush, Waiparera and Split - by setting Fyke and G-minnow nets in each on day-one and then lifting on day-two and assessing the catch. This involved recording information about each one - number and species, length and weight. Of the three kept to eat, one was dissected to identify its organs, check the gut health and determine the sex, the rest were released. This exercise helps to inform the ecological restoration action plans for each of the Dune Lakes in the project.

The wānanga received lots of positive feedback and plans are underway to include this as a possible annual event for the project teams.
